It is a gift that God will give you if it is His will and your desire. Speaking in tongues is not a right for all Christians. But what is to be expected is that God will graciously give you gifts that He knows will help you to build up His body the church.
It is up to you under the guidance of your church leaders to discover what those God given gifts are. If you eagerly desire the greater gifts and are asking God out of a genuine motivation to glorify Him and build up His church then why would He not equip you for His service?

Here are some tips to help you activate speaking in tongues: Begin to thank God that He has given you the ability to speak in tongues.
Keep praising Him and thanking Him in your native language. As you discern certain sounds coming up out of your spirit, begin to speak them out. Turn on praise music and begin to worship God. As you do, relax your tongue and allow the syllables to come up. Read the written Word until you feel another language bubbling up. Begin to speak that out loud. Yours will not be the same as theirs, but sometimes this helps. Pray in your native tongue until you sense another language arising.
Relax your tongue and jaw and begin to speak it out. Ask another Spirit-filled believer to pray in tongues with you The more you practice speaking in tongues, the more natural it will become.

Find a quiet place where you can sit and be alone for up to an hour, or however long you plan to pray by speaking in tongues. Try to avoid noises from things that may call your attention away from God, such as loud children, a TV playing, or street noise from outside.
