The concepts of shapes and forms are taught to kids very early in life when they are made to differentiate between a circle and a triangle shapes or a photograph and the real object forms. We can draw shapes on paper in the form of a circle or a rectangle. However, the same shape of a circular object becomes a sphere in the real world, and we then have three instead of two dimensions such as height, width and depth instead of just height and width in case of shapes.
Let us take a closer look at this dichotomy called shapes and forms. If a kid is asked to draw a ball on paper, all he can do is to draw a circle that represents a 3 dimensional ball in real life. The form of the ball becomes a shape that is circular. Or the other way around - when we create a 3D form from a flat drawing or a sketch As we do when we create a sculpture or design a building. We use simple shapes to simplify more complex ones as we draw from observation.
This is a very important skill that will allow you to become more accurate in your drawings. Simple shapes help us plan and sketch our ideas as a concept - without going into too much details, but keeping the main idea. Abstract Art, or non-objective art - is a great example of use of shapes and forms where they play the dominant role just by themselves. Graphic Designers use shapes as one of their main tools to symbolize ideas, to create layouts and logos, to design typefaces, or to emphasize important points.
Do not underestimate the power of shapes and forms in your art, no matter what art form is your favorite! Notes: Everything we see around us is a shape or a form. In visual arts, shape and form are defined by other elements of art. Shape and form can be defined by line. Line and shape almost always work together. Or by changing the color of the area. Or by adding a different texture. As such, forms exist outside the confines of a flat paper or canvas space.

Shapes are in 2D have length and width while forms are in 3D have length, width, and height. Shapes are described depending on the number of its sides and to some degree its angular relationship. Forms are described by virtue of the area of space bordered by the lines. Shapes are far simpler figures compared to the more complex forms. Shapes exist in the space of flat and simple drawings, printings, and painting surfaces while forms exist beyond the space of shapes.
