A Medieval ambiance and historical and cultural attractions still dominate the wonderful cityscape today and hark back to the city's glorious past as a Free and Hanseatic city. Surrounded by water, the Old Town with its seven towers and five main churches is testament to 1, years of eventful history. An excellent example of Brick Gothic architecture, the St. Mary's Church features the world's tallest brick vault. Other significant buildings in the Old Town include the ensemble around the Town Hall, the castle monastery, the Koberg square, the district between St. Peter's Church and the cathedral, the Holsten Gate — the city's most famous landmark — and the Salzspeicher salt storehouses on the banks of the Trave River.
Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city. Burgtor, another ancient gate guarding the former north entrance of the city is also worth visiting, though often overshadowed by the more famous Holstentor. Another stunning landmark of the city is the 13th century Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, which was one of the first social institutions in the world.
Originally built as a hospital for the poor, it served as a retirement home during the Reformation. Today, it is open to public tours and hosts a popular arts and crafts market during the Christmas season.
Anther notable church in the city is the 13th century Gothic St. Its stained-glass windows depict unusual macabre art. The church has a statue of the Devil, who is believed to have unwittingly helped in building the church. Other noteworthy churches in the city include the 12th century Petrichurch, the 14th century red brick Gothic church Sankt Jakobi, and the smallest church in the city — St. Aegidien Kirche.
